Partners Soar in 2004

by Lisa Singh

Within the words
Of songs flowing in the wind
People live
In state or province
Prisoners of pictures
Written with the indelible ink of a mind
Formed through experiences long ago forgotten

Yet
There is a bridge in Windsor
Where people meet and mingle
Telling their story
Shaking hands
For the dating game of dollars
In multiple shades of colo(u)r

And a bus drives passengers
South one year
And north another (we hope)
So the eligible bachelor/ettes
Can share a perspective
A snapshot of their lives
Beyond the invisible wall
That binds us to our home

Grab my hand at the bridge
And take me to your side
For just a little while
Break down the image formed
From inexperience
Remove the fear of unknown sounds
Speaking different tongues

Let’s walk – you and me
In the paths of ancestors
And those who walked before
But are forgotten and lost
Let’s walk while I tell you of my city
The triumphs and the struggles
And you tell me of the languages in yours
The multitude of tongues and different voices
That make ours seem so similar
Are we the same?
Hiding beneath a veil of difference…

Maybe
Can we shake hands on that?
Eh…
